A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is a search of a person's details against criminal records and other sources, including the Police National Computer. The check will either confirm that you don’t have a criminal record, or it will list any relevant convictions, cautions, reprimands, warnings and, if applicable, whether you have been barred from working with vulnerable groups.
When the DBS check is complete, you will receive a disclosure certificate. Both you, and your employer, will see the results of your search. Whatever the results your employer will decide whether they can still employ you. Having a criminal record does not necessarily bar you from working or volunteering with an organisation.
A disclosure normally will be received in the following timescales as the Disclosure and Barring Service aims to process:
Please Note. It may be possible for a DBS check to take up to eight weeks in total to receive due to one or more of the following reasons:
If you have any further questions please contact your local VCS office and ask for a DBS advisor or visit the DBS website directly.
From 1 December 2012, the CRB and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) have merged to form a new organisation, the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
As part of this process, CRB application forms and certificates will be switching to DBS versions. These will be available for use from 12 November 2012, although present forms will be valid up until 28 February 2013. After this time, only the DBS forms will be used. The changes to the form will involve only the removal of references to the CRB and ISA and rebranding for the DBS and the removal of sections that related to the VBS scheme, which was never fully established. For more information download the timeline and process documents at the bottom of this page.
We would advise you to keep abreast of all of the changes to safeguarding generally, via the DBS website
The service and processes currently provided by the CRB are not changing as a result of the merger. They will continue to deliver services to customers as normal throughout this transition. They will however be going through a rebranding exercise. As part of the rebranding they will introduce the new DBS logo, there will be small changes to the application form and certificate and some of the language that is used and the website guidance will also look a little different. If you have any questions or queries in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us.
